My TOP 10 Movies

TOP 10 MOVIES OF ALL TIME

How's it going, folks?

I'll leave you here the list of my ten favorite movies of all time...
Enjoy!

#10

REQUIEM FOR A DREAM

Okay...this is the movie that make me love Darren Aronofsky. With "The Fighter" and "Pi" and "Black Swan" I thought he was a wonderful filmmaker. This..."Requiem for a Dream", make him look like a masterpiece maker. This film is so bizarre and visually amazing! The editing gives a nice effect that goes well along with the story. Thanks to this movie I will never EVER do drugs in my life, and...so far so good.

#9

12 ANGRY MEN

Where do we begin? This film is so wonderful...mainly because of the fact that it's all set on a room (aside from one or two one-minute scenes). 12 angry men discussing whether a young man is innocent or guilty of the murder of his own father. Who could say one could bring up an amazing two hour film out of that little sentence? Great performances, great management of the few elements they had, great movie!

#8

THE SOCIAL NETWORK

Again...another masterpiece. David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin are a great team! This film's script is simply amazing, so...complete, if that's alright. The pace, the editing (specially the rowing race), and the dialogue and chemistry between characters made this movie almost perfect.

#7

PINOCCHIO

Okay...I grew up watching this movie...among many other Disney movies. But this one...this one had something special, probably because of the Whale (I loved sea creature when I was a kid) or the relationship between father and son the characters portrayed. I still love this film. My favorite animated feature.

#6

AMADEUS

A magical film. Why do I say this? You see, my favorite scene is that one in which Mozart and Salieri are writing the last Requiem together, towards the ending, and as Mozart describes the notes and rhythm, you can hear the pieces of music, like if you were in Mozart's head. And that's it! How can a movie make a scene as simple as that one be so wonderful?! I guess Milos Forman is a genius...

#5

INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS

How could this be missing in this list? Not only my favorite War/Nazi Movie, but probably one of the greatest films of this century. Tarantino does it again...he crates masterpieces, with wonderful characters and dialogues. And those sublime stories divided in chapters (most of them). Hans Landa is one of the main reasons for which I love Inglourious Basterds. God Bless Tarantino!

#4

THE DARK KNIGHT

To be honest with you, I would never thought a superhero movie could make it on the list. Well, Mr. Nolan changed my mind completely, and what's more, his finest movie got the fourth place! Right, The Dark Knight is one of my favorite movies of all time. My favorite superhero movie ever. And, come on, a lot of this film's popularity is thanks to Heath Ledger's performance, which was astonishing. R.I.P.

#3

ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST

I love movies about crazy people or mental institutions. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is probably the greatest one! Jack Nicholson's greatest performance in my opinion. Milos Forman greatest picture. And all the supporting characters, the mentally ill and Nurse Ratchet... God, those characters make the movie! It also showed a dark side of mental institutions not many people knew about, back in the day. What a great piece of movie.

#2

A CLOCKWORK ORANGE

Stanley Kubrick is, in my opinion, the greatest filmmaker of all time, and that's never going to change. A Clockwork Orange is, by far, the most bizarre movie I've ever seen in my entire life. It knew what it was, it didn't go as far as to be considered gory or mild porn... It was violent, visually amazing, the main character was perfect, and the story, even though simple, is, to date, one of the greatest story lines. I'll never get tired of this movie.

#1

PULP FICTION

Ahh...Tarantino. Do I have to say more? Tarantino is my second favorite director, right after Kubrick, and I think it's because every single movie he has made is nearly perfect. Pulp Fiction, for instance, is a masterpiece. My favorite film of all time! Why? Cast, Characters, Dialogue, Story, Music, Moral (wait...moral? Nah...), etc... This film has it all! I've seen it over a thousand times... I'll never get tired of it!

This is the end of the list...and of this entry as well!

Scariest Movie of ALL TIME?

WHAT IS SCARY???

How's it going, folks.

To be honest, there are very few things that scare me in this world.
I'm kinda scared of spiders, sharks, snakes, Ashton Kutcher's acting, etc, etc...

But...is there a MOVIE that scares me?
Mhm...

I guess a lot of people have at least one movie that scares them. For some is "The Exorcist" for others, "The Shining", for others, "Insidious"...and the list would go on and on.

However there are some people who are not scared of movies.
Keep in mind, please, that when I say SCARED I mean that this movie or this character haunts your nightmares, you are afraid of walking alone in the dark because this film or character got you scared! You can't stop thinking about it!
That's being scared! Not jumping in the middle of the theater, that's just having a completely normal reaction to a loud sudden noise or image...WHICH IS NOT BEING SCARED!

For me...this is actually pretty hard to admit.

Since I believe a horror's film point is to scare you...well...there's only ONE single horror film, out of ALL OF THEM that scares me....to this day...

That is...

CHILD'S PLAY!!!!!!!

I know, I know... You must be thinking I'm a chicken or an asshole right now!

Guys, I'm not a chicken, nor an asshole. I'm not bullshitting you.
I saw this films at a very early age. Can't remember exactly, but...it's actually a kind of a trauma...

I can't see a picture of Chucky without getting scared! Whenever I go into a toy store and I see Chucky...I have to get the hell out of there immediately! I remember my cousins one forced me to watch "Child's Play 3" (By the way..."Child's Play" is the scariest, the sequels are fine...still scary for me, though, except for "Bride of Chucky" and "Seed of Chucky", those ruined it) and I had a nervous breakdown...that lasted for MONTHS!

I couldn't sleep, I threw up all the time, I was thinking of Chucky every single second of every single minute of every single hour of every single day of every single week of every single month!

Chucky has a terrible effect on me! I don't dare watching this all on my own, or joined by my friends, or with an entire crowd supporting me. I can't! I'm too scared of this little bastard!

Believe it or not, I've heard cases of people who, just like me, are afraid of Chucky. Most of them were teenagers like me. I do believe I'm not alone and I think that...one day...I'm going to beat this up!

Now, to end this entry... I've said before that a horror film point is to scare people, and...since this is...in my opinion, the scariest film EVER MADE BY HUMAN KIND (this is probably kinda unfair since I saw it when I was a little kid and it's actually a trauma...but...meh)...I consider "Child's Play" to be...

THE BEST HORROR MOVIE EVER MADE! (for me...)

Please, leave a comment and tell me what are your thoughts on "Child's Play" and horror movies.

Is the HORROR genre...WASTED?

HOOORRRROOOORRR...

How's it going, folks.
It's pretty odd to say that, since I created this blog a couple of minutes ago...

Anyway, let's get this straight.

Horror.

Have you ever seen an old horror film? A classic maybe? How about "Evil Dead"? Or "The Exorcist"?
I have. And my friends have. Since we are all teenagers (I'm 16, by the way) we didn't see those films at theaters. We saw them at one of my pal's place...comfortable...

Do you know what we asked ourselves right after we saw them?

"WHAT THE #$"!&$&&#$%!#$?"

Oh, please, don't worry. I know how to appreciate a good old classic, and the genre doesn't matter...AT ALL! But my friends, and I'm sure many other teenagers nowadays, may ask themselves:

"Was this considered "scary" back in the day?!"

Okay now, let's be honest. If we saw any of those old horror films that scared the hell out of people in the 70's and 80's ("Evil Dead", "The Exorcist", "Child's Play", "Jaws" etc...) we'd probably laugh out loud.
And why's that?
Because that's just not scary NOWADAYS.

Back in the day, yeah, those were some of
the scariest movies ever (in fact, some people I know are still scared of "The Exorcist"). But now, it's very rare to catch up a good horror movie.

For example, in the 70's, an atheist went into the theater to watch "The Exorcist". Three hours later he was already a believer.

Possession, exorcism, the devil, killer dolls, sharks...

Are these scary? Today...not at all.

What's the problem? Why has this changed?

In my opinion...the horror genre has wasted.

All those "jump moments" in which something "scary" appears on the screen and everyone in the theater jumps "scared"...that's not horror.
All those bad horror flicks that make horror movies look like comedies...that's not horror.
All those gory and violent scenes that consider themselves as "scary"...that's not horror.

These are the pencils pretending to be pens.

They think gore and jumps are scary, but they're not.
Do they have an effect on us?
Yes, of course they do.
Is it horror?
No, it's not.
A horror films's purpose is to SCARE people, and this has come one of the most difficult tasks in filmmaking nowadays.

Is there any hope for horror movies?
I do believe there is.

Can we rely on someone?
I do believe we can.

Who.......?
James Wan.

Let me explain something, alright.
He has directed "Saw" and "Insidious".
This kinda contradicts myself, right?
I mean, Insidious is filled with "jump moments" and "Saw" is basically what I just said before: Gore pretending to be Horror...Pencil pretending to be Pen.

Trust me, it's not that way.

First of all, I love "Insidious" because Mr. Wan relies on visuals to scare people. Whenever I see it I realize what he's doing. He doesn't rely a lot on the jump scenes to make a film scary. He pretty much relies on his characters, the story itself and, of course, the amazing visuals.
A lot of my friends say "Insidious" is one of the scariest stuff they've ever seen in their lives! "Why?", I ask them... Because...

Yeah. This scene scares the crap out of so many people. And even though it's a jump scene, I do still think the most "scary" thing here is the Red Faced Devil behind the man.
By the way, that's 0% CGI. There's no special effects. In fact it's only make up. Trust me, I've seen the Behind the Scenes footage and yeah, it is pretty awesome to see that Red Faced Devil hang out with the director and actors on the set.

Now, let's get to "Saw".
Wan directed "Saw", not "Saw II", nor "Saw III", nor "Saw IV", nor "Saw LXXXII" (82...). Yeah, he contributed with the making of some other Saw movies, but what he wanted to do, in fact, was a film about two guys trapped in a room.
To be honest, I loved "Saw", and I hated the sequels. Mainly because "Saw" doesn't have a lot of gory stuff, while his sequels do.

Another thing I love from Wan? Have you seen the budget with which he made "Saw" and "Insidious"? Less than 2 million dollars. He made two horror contemporary masterpieces (to my eyes) with a low budget, and those films made a hell of a lot of money!

Looking forward to "The Conjuring" and "Insidious: Chapter Two". I BELIEVE IN WAN!

Thanks for checking this entry. Leave a comment, let me know what would you like me to talk about on my next entry.
  • What are your favorite horror movies?
  • Have you seen any good horror movies recently?
  • What are your thoughts on horror movies and the horror genre nowadays?
I'll be posting soon!

Until then, I'm Gabriel, and this is FUNTIME Productions.

(films and people I mentioned on this entry):

FUNTIME Productions

Hey there.

This is the first day of this little film production company called FUNTIME Productions.

I, Gabriel Legua, will be posting entries from time to time - sometimes I will tell news about the films or short films FUNTIME's producing, sometimes I'll post some videos or short films, sometimes I'll be posting my own opinions on some stuff (related to films, obviously), and some other times I'll make reviews of the most recent movies (even though I'll also review some old classics...which I love).

Anyway, this, ladies and gentlemen, is the beginning of a new era...for me... Yeah, yeah, I know...a little cocky, but, hey, it's just sarcasm. My humor is very dry, so...please, forgive...

See ya' later, guys!
